Miriam Goodman considers herself a writer who takes pictures. In fact, she has a talent for merging the two in a way that asks you to see her photographs in very specific, much more personal way. In After a Certain Age, Goodman uses her photographs to tell the story of a woman getting older. Using objects that she handles and the spaces she moved through, Goodman adds words that typify the perceptions of many women, removing any ambiguity and making the photographs very concrete in meaning.

A collection of make-up and hair accessories is made more poignant by the words “It was very important we told her how good she looked,” while a calendar with scribble notes is given more meaning by the phrase “She had trouble remembering dates.”
