The Griffin Museum of Photography announces that Lily Kupets, a student at
Winchester High School in Winchester, MA, has been chosen to receive the Joan
Johnson Scholarship of $1,000. In the fall, Kupets will attend the Fashion
Institute of Technology in New York. She will be presented the award at the
opening reception of the 15th Juried Exhibition at the museum July 15, 7 p.m.
Kupets was one of many students who submitted work to the portion of the juried
exhibit for area high school seniors. A selection of the work is on exhibit in
the Griffin Gallery July 8 through August 8.
While there was no theme or format for submissions, students were asked to
select an image that best represented them, personally and photographically.
The photographs were also judged on whether they were technically well
produced, compelling, and original. Jurors were photographer Andrea Rosenthal
of Boston and Rory Schuler, editor of the Winchester Star newspaper.
"My urge to pick up a camera one day has spiraled into something huge," said
Kupets, who studied photography at Winchester High School for two years.
"Photography has become a passion for me. It has taught me to see things in a
completely new way."
Kupet's winning entry was a color image of her grandparents titled, Nostalgia
"The composition, perspective and subject matter of this photo seem to fluidly
work together. Combined, they backdrop a story and a familiar moment for even a
pair of strangers (judges)," said jurors Rosenthal and Schuler. "The viewers
perspective is reminiscent of the way a grandchild would view his or her
grandparent.
We get the feeling that this image is not just what the image is, it's the
artist's interpretation of the subjects."
The Griffin Museum of Photography is open Tuesday through Thursday, 11 am - 5
pm; Friday 11 am - 4 pm; and Saturday and Sunday, noon - 4 pm. The Museum is
closed on Monday. Admission is $5 for adults; $2 for seniors. Members and
children under 12 are admitted free. Admission is free to all every Thursday.
