Artist & Juror Talk: Jennifer Shaw, Juror of 2018 Somerville Toy Camera Festival

The Griffin Museum of Photography is pleased to host Jennifer Shaw as she gives a talk about her photography and her work as a juror. She is the juror for the 2018 Somerville Toy Camera Festival, and she is here in conjunction with the festival and an exhibition of her personal work here at the Griffin Museum. A reception will follow the talk from 5:30-7:30 pm.

Jennifer Shaw is a fine art photographer whose work is based on both a world observed and a world constructed, often focusing on the fleeting and personal within the sphere of her immediate surroundings. Her photographs have been featured in Oxford American, Shots, Black + White Photography (UK), NPR, Lenscratch, and PDN, and are published in two monographs: Hurricane Story (Chin Music Press, 2011), and Nature/Nurture (North Light Press, 2012).

Jennifer Shaw also the founder and creative director of PhotoNOLA, New Orleans’ annual photography festival. The festival showcases works from local and international artists, and is coordinated by the New Orleans Photo Alliance (NOPA) in partnership with museums and galleries citywide. Shaw was a founding officer of NOPA, non-profit arts organization whose mission is to encourage the understanding and appreciation of photography. She has juried contests and exhibitions for One One Thousand, Three Rivers Arts Festival, Piclet.org’s POPCAP 2014, Louisiana State University Student Art Show (2015, 2007), GNOCC, and the Sony World Photography Awards, 2017.  Her curatorial experience includes I’ll Be Your Mirror, Homespace Gallery, 2012; Gathering, A. Smith Gallery, 2015; as well as numerous PhotoNOLA exhibitions over the past twelve years.

Shaw grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, studied photography at the Rhode Island School of Design, and then moved to New Orleans in pursuit of the artist’s life. She currently teaches the disappearing art of darkroom photography at the Louise S. McGehee School and serves as creative director of the annual PhotoNOLA Festival, in addition to chasing after two young sons.
