Photoshop for Photographers

This course presents participants with an introduction to the technical aspects needed for preparing images/files for use in traditional and new media using Adobe Photoshop, Bridge and Lightroom. This course will cover the technical aspects of digital file archiving, image file preparation using Photoshop; including file manipulation, retouching, color and exposure correction.

This Course will meet six times, for three hours per meeting:

Meeting One: Archiving
– Discussing the need to archive images/files
– Best practice
– Techniques and examples
– Setting up work space and metadata template

Meeting Two: Photoshop Tools
– Go over file processing tools in Lightroom and Camera Raw
– Photoshop tools
– Adjustment layers

Meeting Three: Photoshop Demonstration I
– Retouching basics examples for portrait/landscape
– Working as a class (have files to work with)

Meeting Four: Photoshop Demonstration II
– Critique looking at files from last meeting
– Advanced tools: Making paths, making brushes, layer blending modes

Meeting Five: Working on files
– Class will be working independently, instructor will work with student’s individual questions

Meeting Six: Final Critique
–  Class will look at files and offer feedback

Session 2 – Monday February 4, 6 pm – 9 pm
Session 3 – Monday February 18, 6 pm – 9 pm
Session 4 – Monday February 25, 6 pm – 9 pm
Session 5 – Monday March 4, 6 pm – 9 pm
Session 6 – Monday March 11, 6 pm – 9 pm

Note: Participants will need to bring their own computers with Photoshop, Bridge and Lightroom installed.

Cost:  $300 Griffin members; $350 non-members
Class is limited to 12 students

Instructors Biography:

Brian Wilson

Brian Wilson is an award-winning photographer. He spent the early part of his career working as a commercial photographer, visual communications professional, and videographer to help companies and institutions visually convey their messages. Brian Wilson received his BA in Graphic Communications Design with a photographic concentration from New England College in Henniker, NH (2002). In 2003 Brian moved to Philadelphia where he ran a successful photography business with a focus on food and editorial content. Brian’s work has been featured in articles and advertisements within numerous publications, including DiningOut PhiladelphiaOprah MagazineHome MiamiChronicle of Higher EducationNew Jersey Countryside magazines and The New York Times. In 2007 Brian became one of the photographers for Princeton University where his passion for science and research was reignited. In 2013, Brian left Princeton for a medical photographer position at Massachusetts General Hospital while working on his Masters of Fine Arts at Lesley University College of Art and Design, which he completed in 2015.

In 2016, Brian began his teaching career and is now an Assistant Professor at Framingham State University. Working in academia has allowed Brian to pursue his art along with his continued work in theory. Brian is interested in theories and science that explore sight and visual perception. His work has been shown in national and international shows including: Persistent Memories in Boston, MA; The Incubator 7 Art Festival in Valencia, Spain; and the Photography Now exhibition in Cambridge, MA. His work challenges our vision and perception of the world around us.
