Studio Lighting: Still Life with Mark Thayer

November 4, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Studio Lighting: Still Life will introduce attendees to the exciting world of manipulating light. You will learn about the tools of the trade and the myriad ways they can be coaxed into mimicking natural light or creating something that could only happen in the studio.

You will discover the magic that happens when what appears to be a completely haphazard collection of tools results in an image of beauty and simplicity. Studio lighting is the craft that leads to artistic expression in a controlled environment.

We will start with a simple one-light set and work through more involved scenarios. The camera  will be tethered to the Mac using Capture One, a robust and complex application. While Capture One is an essential tool in the studio process, we will be concentrating primarily on what goes on under the lights.

No previous studio experience is required and there’s no need to bring a camera to the workshop, we will all be collaborating on a single setup.

In six short hours we will cover:

  • Learning from the master, Mother Nature.  Being a keen observer of natural light.
  • The camera isn’t going to move (much) so let’s stop squinting at that little screen. Camera to computer connection, shooting tethered.
  • Small bulb, big bang, dumping and bleeding. Introduction to studio strobe equipment operation.
  • Knuckles, Fingers, Arms and Heads. Introduction to studio grip equipment.
  • Tools for photon management. Demonstration of modifiers, nets, cutters, diffusion panels, bounce cards, gels, and more.
  • 93 million miles…  The challenges of getting the look of natural light in the studio.

Biography: Mark Thayer

A 1978 graduate of the New England School of Photography in Boston, Massachusetts, Mark Thayer began shooting commercial assignments while still in school. After a successful stint
as staff photographer for a Boston-area advertising firm, he opened his own studio in 1983, and acquired such noted clients as Bose Audio, Chase Bank, Hewlett Packard and American Express, to name just a few.

In 2003 Thayer developed a relationship with a small Boston-based museum and in addition to photographing much of the institution’s collection, he consulted on exhibit design and ultimately designed, created original photography for, and installed dozens of temporary exhibits over a ten year period. All the while continuing his freelance work.

In 2013 he was approached by Sperry Topsider, one of his freelance clients, to come onboard full time and build an in-house photography and video department. That department now produces nearly all of the assets supporting the brand, including studio still-life, on-model, and location photography and video.

Throughout his career, Mark has always taken time to follow a fine art path as well. Samples of that work can be seen at www.markthayer.com
