In 2016, Paris Photo celebrated it’s 20th year as the largest, international banquet of photography. A global image feast representing work by thousands of emerging, current and iconic photographers from 28 countries. It welcomed over 60,000 attendees, 153 galleries, 30 book sellers, in addition to multiple lectures and platforms. Join J. Sybylla Smith, Independent Curator and Karen Haas, Lane Curator of Photographs at the Museum of Fine Arts, as they show work and discuss their participation in Paris Photo 2016.

J. Sybylla Smith

J.Sybylla Smith is an independent curator of over 20 exhibitions featuring 70-plus international photographers for the Griffin Museum/DSI Gallery, VII Photo Gallery and the Center for Digital Arts. As an educator she has been an adjunct professor, guest lecturer and thesis advisor at Emmanuel College, Harvard University, Wellesley College, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and the School of Visual Arts. Smith created curriculum and teaches on Creativity and Concept Development. She consults with photographers and arts institutions to create written content and produce exhibitions, related programming and events.


Karen Haas

Karen Haas has been the Lane Curator of Photographs at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston since 2001, where she is responsible for a large collection of photographs by American modernists, Charles Sheeler, Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, and Imogen Cunningham. The Lane Collection, numbers more than 6,000 prints. Haas also received the 2016 New England Beacon award at the Focus Awards presented by the Griffin Museum of Photography. Haas received her MA from Boston University and held various curatorial positions in museums and private collections, including the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the BU Art Gallery, and the Addison Gallery of American Art. Her recent exhibitions include, Gordon Parks: Back to Fort Scott, Edward Weston: Leaves of Grass, and Bruce Davidson: East 100th Street. Publications include, An Enduring Vision: Photographs from the Lane Collection, Common Wealth: Art by African Americans in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Ansel Adams, and The Photography of Charles Sheeler: American Modernist.
