Two Day Intensive: Advanced Night Landscape Photography with Jürgen M. Lobert

This two day, 9-hour weekend workshop starts with a Friday afternoon Zoom session to
discuss concepts and strategy for a fun-filled evening of advanced night landscape image
creation. Content includes the basics of astro-landscape photography and light painting.
Under the creative and technical direction of the instructor, students will then meet on
location and spend that Friday evening creating astro-landscape photos with star points, Milky
Way, star trails, cloud streaks and a crescent moon set, supported by light painting in a dark,
natural location. The class will reconvene on Sunday morning at the Griffin Museum to process
files produced from the shoot and conclude with an image share.

This workshop is dependent on weather, the photo shoot cannot be done when it rains or
snows, hence, availability for a rain date on Saturday evening is needed. If the rain date is
also not suitable for shooting, an alternate date will be selected with involvement of the
registrants.

Pre-requisites: Students enrolling in this course should have already completed an Introduction to
Night Photography course or compatible experience, as well as a strong understanding of camera
functions and the ability to make manual exposures in RAW shooting mode in darkness. 
Required Gear: a camera capable of fully manual settings, where exposure time, aperture, BULB
mode, white balance and ISO sensitivity can be manually set. A remote camera release,
intervalometer (or built-in times longer than 30s), a sturdy tripod, lenses and handheld lighting
sources.

For the editing session, you will need a laptop with editing software installed.

Weekend Class Dates/ Times Breakdown:

Day 1 – Friday, April 12, 2024

2pm-5pm via Zoom.
A preparation eBook and suggestions for equipment will be distributed to attendees prior to
the workshop. Zoom session, 2 to 5 p.m.
Presentation about astro-landscape photography and light painting, followed by a location
discussion and Q&A.

8:00pm – 11:00 pm, on Location: Shoot begins on location (within a one hour driving radius from Boston) Sunset is at 7 pm, students will meet after the twilight to ensure dark skies, and to create astro-
landscape photos with foreground light painting, star points, panoramas, star trails or cloud
streaks, and the Milky Way if skies are clear.

Day 2- Sunday, April 14, 2024

In-Person Editing session at the Griffin Museum, 9 am to 12 noon.
Students will need a laptop with your photos taken during the photo shoot, as well as Lightroom
and Photoshop installed. You can use other software, but the instructions and demos will be
done using LR/PS. The instructor will demonstrate concepts such as the creation of
panoramas and star trails, and rotate between attendees for individual supervision.

Dates: April 12 & 14, 2024

Location: Hybrid – Friday, Zoom lecture, in-person shooting on location, and Sunday, in-person editing at the Griffin Museum.

Class Fee: Member Price, $250.00 each / Non-Member Price, $305.00 each (The Non-Member price includes a one year membership at the Griffin Museum, a $75 value).

About the Instructor:

Jürgen Lobert is a Massachusetts-based fine art photographer and educator, born and raised in Germany. He specializes in night photography, daytime long exposures, urban exploration and infrared imagery.

Jürgen has curated photography exhibits and his artwork is in the permanent collection of the Art Complex Museum, Duxbury MA and private collectors.

Jürgen also organizes photo excursions, workshops and tours, and he is an international lecturer, instructor and competition judge and teaches photography at the Griffin Museum of Photography. He is a Master Member of the New England Camera Club Council (MNEC) and the founder and organizer of the Greater Boston Night Photographers Meetup group.
