Images & Project Statement
Artist Statement Memories Found Memories Found is about reclaiming childhood memories. Following the loss of my sister, I found myself remembering moments from our childhood I had not thought of in years. I had lost a crucial storyteller of my own childhood, a witness to my story. And with her gone, these memories from long ago, came flooding back with a new significance and perspective. In a poem by Seamus Heaney, “Picking Blackberries”, he speaks to a sense of looking back and finding memories from our childhood that show the promise and optimism of our youth and the reckoning of change that must come with the growing years. Like Heaney’s poem, in Memories Found I tell my story in images from when my sister and I were young in the familiar surroundings of our family followed by the years of growing into adulthood and the acknowledgment of change, loss and what was left behind. I make my prints using a 19th century process, hand painting platinum palladium emulsion onto paper. This results in a warm toned print that, for me, suggests being immersed in a dream about family, memory and loss.
