Visual Reportage Workshops, led by photographers Glenn Cooper and Michael Hintlian, began with the belief the best photography can be an instrument for change and give a voice to the voiceless.
Diverse groups of emerging photographers have traveled to Guatemala and India since 2007 to photograph the people and stories they’ve encountered.
An exhibit of the work of 11 of the photographers is featured at the Griffin Museum at Digital Silver Imaging in Belmont, MA, March 24 through May 27. An opening reception is April 7, 20, 6-8 p.m. A gallery talk is May 19, 7 p.m.
“Joyful, playful, lonely, and bleak, these captured moments intimately portray the human landscape,” say Cooper and Hintlian. “The change they create began with the transformation of the shooter. It continues as the viewer is drawn in to contemplate the story told through the photographers’ eyes – as seen through their own.”
One of the participating photographers, Steph Plourde-Simard, says the workshop didn’t focus on the technical but “on our process, the way we get to the image. We learned that to tell a story – any story – we have to pay attention, interact, make connections, and welcome surprises.”
She says traveling to Guatemala and India for the first time, the photographers were taken out of their comfort zones. And they soon found their preconceptions of the countries were “replaced with a deeper understanding and a grounded sensitivity.”
“These images are glimpses into the everyday lives of people we’ve encountered – caught in fleeting bursts of activity or moments of calm,” says Plourde-Simard. ” Several situations were beyond our imagination. Each artist searched for a way to describe the feelings of humility, frustration, inspiration, sadness, confusion, joy, and uncertainty that were the reality we encountered and bore witness to.”
