More than a Blueprint: A Hands-On Cyanotype Workshop with Edie Bresler

A Yellow Rose Project participant, Edie Bresler, invites you to join us for a two-day, in-person workshop at the Griffin Museum, where you’ll step into the luminous, blue-toned world of cyanotype printing. Whether you’re a photographer, printmaker, or curious creative, this hands-on experience offers a unique opportunity to explore one of photography’s oldest and most enchanting alternative processes.

Traditionally a lensless technique, cyanotypes use only chemistry, sunlight, and time. You’ll learn how to coat paper with light-sensitive emulsions, expose your compositions in natural light, and develop your prints using only water — no darkroom required, and completely non-toxic.

But this workshop goes far beyond the basics. Together, we’ll explore how cyanotypes can combine abstraction and precision, nature and narrative. You’ll have the opportunity to:

• — Create stunning prints from found objects, botanicals, and/or digital negatives
• — Work on a variety of surfaces — from rag papers to birch bark and fabric
• — Experiment with portable UV light sources to extend your creative possibilities
• — Get inspired by the work of historic and contemporary artists who have pushed the boundaries of this unique medium
• — Troubleshoot issues and ideas in a safe and supportive environment

Edie will guide you through techniques and ideas that expand the expressive potential of the cyanotype process, encouraging experimentation and spontaneous discoveries through group collaboration.

Participants will receive a detailed materials list in advance, and additional resources and inspiration will be shared throughout the workshop.

Whether you’re looking to deepen your photographic practice or simply explore a new creative outlet, this workshop offers a welcoming space to learn, play, and create.

Dates: Two sessions on Saturdays: October 18 and October 25, 2025

Time: Day 1 — 10 am–3 pm; Day 2 — 11 am–3 pm EDT

Format: In-person, at the Griffin Museum (67 Shore Rd. Winchester, MA 01890)

Participants: Limited to 12 

Course Fee: $245 (members) / $295 (non-members). A $10 materials fee is included in the total course fee. Participants will also receive a detailed materials list, a week before the first session.

About the Instructor

Edie Bresler is a long-time artist, inspiring educator and popular public speaker. Her work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions across the United States and abroad and their artworks are part of permanent collections at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Danforth Museum, Polaroid Corporation, Fidelity Bank and many private collections worldwide. Bresler also collaborates with local arts organizations such as the Boston Center for the Arts and the Emerald Necklace Conservancy, to produce unique community art actions. Bresler’s projects have been featured on Good Morning America, PBS Greater Boston, in Photograph Magazine, Lenscratch, Slate, Esquire, Photo District News, Aspect Initiative, Business Insider and many others. Bresler has been awarded a Massachusetts Cultural Council fellowship in Photography, a NY Foundation for the Arts grant, a Berkshire Taconic Artist Resource grant, multiple visual artist fellowships from the Somerville Arts Council and several Faculty Research grants from Simmons University where Bresler was on faculty from 2000-2024. Bresler lives in Somerville, MA where they raised a creative son, garden, and bike across the city with a camera.
