37 PHOTOGRAPHERS / ONE MODEL

This show willed itself into existence. As a teacher of nudes in nature workshops for twenty years, I make a point of hiring models of differing ages, cultures and body types and have always hired male models. I want students to break from the dominant stereotype that nudes are only of “beautiful” fertile females. There is so much more to be said about human existence via the body than procreation. I believe that valuable nude photographs are created from the life experience, creative ability and spirit of each photographer. All models are viable subjects. It is the beauty of a photographer’s seeing that creates successful images.

Several men have modeled for my workshops over the years, none with as much success as Jim Banta, a male dancer in his fifties, whom I met in 2007. Compelled to drop their preconceptions of nude photography and deal with a variety of new feelings and thoughts, students might approach the challenge with apprehension. Jim’s comfort in his body, love of modeling, athleticism, and delight in proposing ideas played a large role in moving my students to new territory.

The images got increasingly better over the years until my quip that there ought to be a “Jim Show” grew into a mandate for this exhibition. These collaborations with Jim, in their quality, originality and range, speak for themselves about what nude photography can be.
