Rohina Hoffman | Griffin State of Mind

Our shared and common humanity is assumed but not always evident. Making work inspired from my own personal experiences, I look for ways to further and deepen our thoughts on this connection.

In Embrace, Los Angeles based photographer Rohina Hoffman reflects on the theme of uncertainty while combining two of her photographic projects. In Gratitude, made during the pandemic, is a typology of portraits celebrating food and family and how we find comfort in times of unease. Generation 1.75 is a visual memoir of identity, belonging, and the complexities of acculturation.

Embrace will be on display at the Griffin until May 28, 2023.

Tell us a little about your background.

I grew up in a family of doctors spanning three generations. I also became a doctor, specifically a neurologist. Despite our emphasis on science, everyone in my family also had artistic pursuits. Since high school,I have always been involved with photography and decided about ten years ago to focus on it.

Can you explain the thought behind your show, and why it is presented in the way it is?

I wanted the show to be a sensory engaging experience. There are the photographs of course, but there is also text (both prose and poetry), scent, in the form of a reed diffuser, and my book, Embrace, to hold and touch and skim through. 

What feeling do you hope to leave your viewers with when surrounded by your work?

Walking into the Griffin Gallery, I want viewers to be wholly embraced by the art and to feel alive. I hope they that they feel and connect with the photographs and text elements, and walk out of the gallery with a softer more hopeful heart.

What is a literary, musical or visual obsession you have at the moment?

I am currently obsessed with Maira Kalman and her books (most recent being “Women Holding Things”.) Her combination of witty text and bold colorful images, her simple playful approach about the human condition is at once personal and universal. I can read them over and over again.

ABOUT ROHINA HOFFMAN:

Rohina is a fine art photographer whose practice uses portraiture and the natural world to investigate themes of identity, home, adolescence and the female experience.

Born in India and raised in New Jersey, Rohina grew up in a family of doctors spanning three generations. While an undergraduate at Brown University, Rohina also studied photography at the Rhode Island School of Design and she was a staff photographer for the Brown Daily Herald. A graduate of Brown University Medical School and resident at UCLA Medical Center, her training led to a career as a neurologist.

A skilled observer of her patients, Rohina was instilled with a deep and unique appreciation of the human experience. Her ability to forge the sacred trust between doctor and patient has been instrumental in fostering a parallel connection between photographer and subject.

Rohina published her first monograph Hair Stories with Damiani Editore (February 2019) accompanied by a solo exhibition at Brown University’s Alpert Medical School. Her monograph, Hair Stories, is held in many notable public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Getty, Cleveland Institute of Art, and over twenty-five university libraries.

Her second monograph, Embrace, with Schilt Publishing was just released October 2022 (Europe) and January 2023 (U.S.).

In 2021, she was the winner of the Altanta Photography Group’s Purchase Award and several of her prints were acquired by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia.

Her photographs have been exhibited in juried group shows both nationally and internationally in venues such as The Center for Fine Art Photography, Griffin Museum, Colorado Photographic Arts Center, Los Angeles Center for Photography, Photo LA,  and A. Smith Gallery. She has received numerous awards and has been published in Marie Claire Italia, F-Stop Magazine, The Daily Beast, Lenscratch, Shots Magazine, and Edge of Humanity among others. She lives with her husband, three children and two golden retrievers in Los Angeles.

JP Terlizzi | Griffin State of Mind

JP Terlizzi is a part of our show, Ties That Bind, on show now at the Griffin until April 16th.

Ties that Bind stitches together three unique visions looking at the idea of family and the rewriting of history, myth and personal narratives. These artists work with images and objects, including various materials, with the addition of stitching on found images, personal family photos. Each artist finds ways to change the script, rewrite what has been lost and gain clarity of vision.

Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

I come from a graphic design and advertising background. I work full-time as the Executive Creative Director for a retail design agency in NYC and have been creating designs in the retail sector for close to 40 years. I’m responsible for helping brands and retailers articulate their products and services, and how that visually gets communicated to consumers at retail. I came to photography much later in life, it was another outlet to express myself creatively without having to answer to clients. It allows me the freedom to explore subjects that interest me and create things on my own terms and timelines.

Tell a little about your work in the new exhibition, “Ties That Bind.”

I come from a very large and loving extended Italian family. I’ve been thinking a lot about family history and the legacies that are left behind as I age, and how much of my own family history has been lost due to family members that I have passed. Their memories and stories of family are now also gone. I wanted to create a series around objects. Objects that focus on the relationship between the family archive and personal memory that I someday could pass down to the younger generations as my legacy.

What led to your decision to use mixed media photography as a means to explore connections between past and present? 

I’ve been curious and wanted to explore assemblages for a while. It seemed like a natural progression in my practice. I took a workshop in Oct. of 2021 with Dawn Surratt and really embraced the assemblage world. It was a way for me to use the photograph as a starting point and dive much deeper with the use of objects to tell more of a personal story with layers and create these one-of-a-kind pieces around each family member.

Finally, What is a literary, musical or visual obsession you have at the moment?

I’ve been visually obsessing with patterns for the past several months, specifically wallpapers. I am currently in the process of making some new work to add to the series The Good Dishes. The new work is much more colorful and elaborate with over-the-top patterns. I have been obsessing how I can make it all look visually chaotic but balance the beauty and elegance that The Good Dishes are known for. 

ABOUT JP TERLIZZI

JP Terlizzi is a New York City photographer whose contemporary practice explores themes of memory, relationship, and identity. His images are rooted in the personal and heavily influenced around the notion of home, legacy, and family. He is curious how the past relates and intersects with the present and how the present enlivens the past, shaping one’s identity.

Born and raised in the farmlands of Central New Jersey, JP earned a BFA in Communication Design at Kutztown University of PA with a background in graphic design and advertising. He has studied photography at both the International Center of Photography in New York and Maine Media College in Rockport, ME.

JP’s work has been exhibited widely in galleries including shows at The Center for Fine Art Photography, Vicki Myhren Gallery at the University of Denver, The Grin Museum, Tilt Gallery, Panopticon Gallery, Candela Gallery, The Los Angeles Center of Photography, University Gallery at Cal Poly, and The Berlin Foto Biennale, Berlin, Germany, among others.

His solo exhibits include shows at Foto Relevance Gallery (August, 2020) The Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts, Cameraworks Gallery in Portland, OR and Soho Photo Gallery in Manhattan.

Astrid Reischwitz | Griffin State of Mind

Astrid Reischwitz is a part of our show, Ties That Bind, on show now at the Griffin until April 16th.

Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

Although working in the field of natural science, art always played an important role in my life and I see photography as a way to explore life further and pave a path to the future. 

Tell a little about your work in the new exhibition, “Ties That Bind.”

Images in this exhibition are from my series Stories from the Kitchen Table and Spin Club Tapestry, they are based on cultural memories and the evolution of village life in Northern Germany. I see my work as visual storytelling where memories and emotions intertwine into new stories. The work is also a reflection on belonging. I have lived for many years abroad and the photographic work is important to create a new home, a new shelter of emotions. 

What led to your decision to implement family keepsakes into your work as a means of exploring themes like memory and place? 

Keepsakes like old photos and embroidered fabric can tell us more about the past, about the people who touched these memorabilia.  Traditional stories have a profound impact on my current photographic work.  In my village in Germany, women met regularly in “Spin Clubs” to spin wool, embroider, and stitch fabrics for their homes. My composite images are based on these stories and cultural characteristics and I transform this tradition of storytelling into a visual journey. With my own embroidered elements, I explore the theme of memory further.

I love street art/graffiti and became interested in the connection between street art and early rap music after visiting the exhibition “Basquiat and the Hip-Hop Generation” at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Absolutely obsessed with Rapture by Blondie.

ABOUT ASTRID REISCHWITZ

Astrid Reischwitz is a lens-based artist whose work explores storytelling from a personal perspective. Using keepsakes from family life, old photographs, and storytelling strategies, she builds a visual world of memory, identity, place, and home. Her current focus is the exploration of personal and collective memory influenced by her upbringing in Germany.

Reischwitz has exhibited at national and international museums and galleries including Newport Art Museum, Griffin Museum of Photography, Danforth Art Museum, Photographic Resource Center, The Center for Fine Art Photography (CO), Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts, Center for Photographic Art (CA), FotoNostrum, Dina Mitrani Gallery and Gallery Kayafas.

She has received multiple awards, including the 2020 Griffin Award at the Griffin Museum of Photography and the Multimedia Award at the 2020 San Francisco Bay International Photo Awards. Her series “Spin Club Tapestry” was selected as a Juror’s Pick at the 2021 LensCulture Art Photography Awards and is the Series Winner at the 2021 Siena International Photo Awards. She was a Photolucida Critical Mass Top 50 photographer in 2021, 2020, 2019, and 2016; and is a Mass Cultural Council 2021 Artist Fellowship Finalist in Photography.

Her work was featured in Fraction Magazine, Lenscratch, LensCulture, What Will You Rembember?, Wired Japan, Il Post Italy, P3 Portugal, Aint-Bad Magazine, The Boston Globe, NRC Handelsblad Amsterdam, as well as other media outlets.

Olga Merrill | Griffin State of Mind

Olga Merrill’s textured photographic work, Enigma, was on the walls of our Atelier Gallery in June 2022. We wanted to know more about her creative journey and how the work inspired her and in turn inspires us. We asked her a few questions, and this is what she had to say.

Tell us how you first connected to the Griffin Museum.

My first connection with Griffin Museum was in July 2019 at the reception of the Juried Members Show. My husband and I came to congratulate photographers I knew and know now. I became a member after and only one thing I regretted that I did not join earlier. My works have been part of a few exhibitions, I enjoyed a lot of online events as well. My gratitude to the Griffin Museum for everything.

How do you involve photography in your everyday life? Can you tell us about any images or artists that have caught your attention recently?

I was not shooting as intensively last year as I did before. In any case photography and other media are part of my everyday life. I love to make warm tea, set up music and look through wonderful images. I recently got the first edition catalog of Andre Kertesz: The Mirror as Muse. I love studying his Distortion images now.

Please tell us a little about your series Enigma, and how it was conceived.

The concept of this series was born after I became a citizen of the USA. I still have my original citizenship as well. The duality, feeling as I am personally in between two worlds, literally and metaphorically. My “Enigma” is my interpretation of the relationship between our human existence and the Earth.

We all witness the endless flux of life. I invite and provoke the viewer to see deeply into what mysteries are hidden in the intimate corners of the soul. I hope that in the end, one finds answers as to what legacies will be left behind.

Has there been a Griffin Museum exhibition that has particularly engaged or moved you?
This year I enjoyed the exhibition ” E. caballus: The Domesticated Horse“, a wonderful group of photographers, fabulous prints and installations. The horse can be a metaphor for your world and life. A steady rhythmic horse provides riders with an opportunity to move up the scale and to accomplish new things. Take inventory of your world.  What horse are you riding?

What is your favorite place to escape to?
Escape from what and why?  Perhaps some people are trying to escape from themself thinking that they are escaping somewhere. You cannot escape from yourself.

What is a book, song or visual obsession you have at the moment?

I always love to listen to music by Jean Michel Jarre, especially when I am doing post-processing of my photos. The “Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World” by Haruki Murakami is on my table, I want to read it again.

If you could be in a room with anyone to have a conversation, who would it be and what would you talk about?

If God can be called “anyone” it will be God. The topic of conversation will remain a mystery to the public.

Susan Irene Correia | Griffin State of Mind

In today’s Griffin State of Mind, we are thrilled to share our conversation with Susan Irene Correia—equine photographer whose work is devoted to capturing the spirit of the horse in her photography. As part of our E.caballus exhibition, Correia’s works include Power – Dance with Beauty, Play with Abandon, and Be Loved. To learn what gets her in the Griffin State of Mind, we asked her a few questions. 

Tell us how you first connected to the Griffin Museum. 

It’s a fairy godmother story.  At the end of a long day of reviewing portfolios for the Seacoast Camera Club, with one more to go and a long drive home Griffin Museum Executive Director and Curator Paula Tognarelli walked into the library room and reviewed my work. It ended up with an invitation to exhibit at the Griffin. I am so grateful to Paula for this introduction into the Griffin family.

How do you involve photography in your everyday life? Can you tell us about any images or artists that have caught your attention recently?

I try to spend some time reviewing other types of work and be inspired by their journeys and successes. I was fascinated this year by the intense creativity of Kathleen Clemons and was able to organize a local workshop for a small group of photography friends. It was a pleasure to just absorb the joy of working up-close with flowers and learning how to use certain specialty lens. It gave me greater respect for looking for the beauty in the details that I can also apply to with horses. And not to worry about horses stepping on my many times broken toes!

Please tell us a little about your series Power, and how it was conceived.

A horse is an animal of flight – integrated into their brain to survive and to do so they must be intelligent and fit. Under saddle if they are respected and asked to work as a partner they comply to accept the direction of the human hand and beautifully work as one. But the spirit of the horse always yearns for the freedom of the body to move and play. That is what inspired me with the theme of Power broken up into the three areas. But most important to me is to have the viewer give thought to our fast moving society which is reflected in the last piece of the series titled “Three Brands Too Many”.  I want the viewer to enjoy seeing their power but also reflect on their fragility. Including my present dressage horse, all of the horses that I have owned were in troubled situations prior to my intervention so I connected deeply with this horse I photographed.

Has there been a Griffin Museum exhibition that has particularly engaged or moved you?

I really love the Griffin Member Artist exhibits because its a whirlwind of incredible creativity and thought. Its so inspirational. I am obsessed with “Flight” by  Anne Piessens because it represents so clearly to me the dreams I had as a child.

My [other] choice would be “Among the Aspen Trees” by Mary Aiu. It inspires me because not only does it capture the spirit of this horse but utilizes so many other sensory elements and techniques.

What is your favorite place to escape to?

That’s an easy one. Alone with my horse, to groom him, to feel the wind in my face riding him. No other thoughts can get into my mind at that time. The nicker, the nuzzling, his dependency of knowing where I am for his security – healing for me that can not be described.  

What is a book, song or visual obsession you have at the moment?

Tina Turner “Simply the Best”  Timeless creation and there is even a horse in it!

If you could be in a room with anyone to have a conversation, who would it be and what would you talk about?

My mom who caught covid two weeks before her first vaccination was scheduled and passed many months later from post covid complications. To be sure she heard me tell her how much she was loved by all. Please get fully vaccinated and encourage others.

Griffin State of Mind | Jürgen Lobert

Griffin State of Mind, a continuing series acquainting you with the members of the Griffin creative community, introduces you to Jürgen Lobert, one of our newest instructors here at the museum.  His upcoming class on Daytime Long Exposure Photography class starts Wednesday May 26th. For more information on the class, see our Events and Programs page. 

Tell us how you first connected to the Griffin Museum.

As part of my evolving business in fine art photography, I was looking for a creative outlet and community to engage in. The Griffin was a perfect fit, in my area, focused on photography and larger than some other organizations. I also had a couple of friends who were already a member, hence, I decided to join. 

How do you involve photography in your everyday life? Can you tell us about any images or artists that have caught your attention recently?

jl tree 1Photography most certainly made me go through life with a lot more visual appreciation for my surroundings. I often find myself driving along a road, or walking / hiking around and thinking: “ooh, that would make for a neat photo location”. As part of my activity in organizing Meetups and workshops, I have explored and gotten to know the greater Boston area much more than any other of the numerous locations I have lived in before. 

I constantly view other people’s image streams on Instagram, Facebook and more recently also the Griffin’s “Runway” and I find a lot of inspiration doing this. A few communities are catching my eye more recently, one being the light drawing community, the other being certain landscape images, but I do look for many other aspects, too. The main goal is to find inspiration and ideas on what to do or do differently. There are a lot of great artists out there, but what happens to catch my attention most is to see how some of my former students evolve into creating beautiful imagery that I find intriguing.  

The most recent exploration was Alexey Titarenko’s time-bending “City of Shadows” collection, which targets something between freezing moments and blurring them away through long exposures. Quite evocative! 

Can you tell us about the new class you will be teaching at the Griffin this summer?

jl landscape 2I will be teaching Daytime Long Exposure photography, which in itself is really just a technique, but one that can transform landscape or cityscape photos into serene works of art. It is a technique that adds the element of time, or the effects of time to your composition, which is something we usually don’t capture during the day, because high shutter speeds freeze motion. Blurring motion by reducing the amount of light available not only enables us to record the path of clouds and smoothing over water waves, it also makes people, cars and boats disappear, giving the scenery an otherworldly look that sets it apart from most land or city-scapes that we usually view. Images created this way immediately set themselves apart from the mainstream, and they can make mundane places look exciting. It’s a great technique to add to your photography toolbox. In addition, the workshop’s main learning goal is to embrace manual photography, to get out of auto modes and truly master manually setting exposure time, aperture and ISO and playing each other off to arrive at the perfect illumination. It will be an interactive workshop with classrooms for image review, editing and theory, alternating with small group, in-field photo shoots. A safe but fun environment for all.

Has there been a Griffin Museum exhibition that has particularly engaged or moved you?

I haven’t seen too many exhibits yet, but I thought that the recent DIGITS was well thought out and presented a different aspect of photography, apart from mainstream collections we often see. I do also like the variety of the members and winter juried shows.

What is your favorite place to escape to?

jl landscape 3Any location where I create photos! Photography itself is my escape, and it doesn’t matter so much where I am. Everyday life and whatever problems there may be magically disappear when I am out and about with my cameras. I do, however, particularly cherish moonlit nights, be it to capture the moment when our planetary companion comes over the horizon, or when it is brightly lighting up the landscape. And, of course, the grand landscapes of the western US, which seem to be made for night photography. I happen to be there this week, my first trip in 15 months.

What is a book, song or visual obsession you have at the moment?

I don’t know why, but lately my mind keeps playing a lot of my favorite tunes from the 70s and I made it a point to revisit my music library, amend it with more releases from my favorite artists and keep listening to what I have. My favorite genre is Progressive Rock, and the latest “ear worm” has been Greenslade. Perhaps age does that to you, but it’s fun. 

If you could be in a room with anyone to have a conversation, who would it be and what would you talk about?

Oh, that question needs to be more narrow! There are too many people whose minds I’d love to pick or understand. And, of course, to have one more conversation with those no longer among us for closure. 

For photography, I would love to learn about Margarete Bourke-White’s mind when she was taking photos of a nighttime air raid on Moscow. I believe talking to her would be quite insightful.

About Jürgen Lobert

Jürgen Lobert is a Massachusetts-based fine art photographer born and raised in Germany. He received a Ph.D. in atmospheric chemistry before moving to the US in 1991. Jürgen specializes in night photography, daytime long exposures, urban exploration and infrared imagery.He has been taking photos since his early 20s, mostly using color negative or slide film. He adopted digital cameras in the late 1990s and found Nikon cameras to be most suitable for his work. Jürgen started embracing night photography after taking a course at the New England School of Photography in 2011, advanced his skills quickly and enjoys the technical aspects as much as the artistic vision required.

He started organizing night photo events through Meetup groups in 2012 and founded the Greater Boston Night Photographers in 2013. Along with organizing some 40 photoshoots annually, he also lectures at camera clubs, serves as a photo competition judge and organizes professional tours and workshops. Jürgen is an executive member of the Boston Camera Club and member of the Stony Brook Camera Club, the Photographic Society of America and the Professional Photographers of America. Jürgen was an instructor at the New England School of Photography (NESOP) until 2019. Jürgen’s photography expertise is published in camera club newsletters, his own blog and on his Patreon channel. His artwork is in the permanent collection of the Art Complex Museum in Duxbury, MA. Jürgen finds profound peace in roaming the nights in remote places. Capturing the element of time is the most intriguing part, where clouds become bands, cars are bright streaks in the roads, people disappear, stars form trails in the sky and water smooths over to a mirror finish. Night and daytime long exposure photography transform the familiar and create serene views of our surrounding, revealing beauty in the mundane, which we often rush by, but rarely acknowledge in its potential. The resulting images are otherworldly, hauntingly beautiful and serene lightscapes.

Atelier 33 | Amy Eilertsen

In today’s highlight of the Atelier 33 exhibition, we interviewed Amy Eilertsen about her series Memento Vivere: A Study of Life. Amy’s collection of images puts an interesting spin on seventeenth century masters paintings. Scenes of her domestic fowl have become sweet memories, and reminders to live.

Why did Dutch masters’ paintings become such a great inspiration to you? How has this project helped you preserve the memories of your beloved animals?

I studied art history for a few years in college and fell in love with the Dutch masters because of the depth of color and shadow, the rendering of complex and the exotic still life. Historically, during the time the still lifes were rendered, Europe was recovering from the decimation of the Black Plague, and the upper middle class became infatuated with the exotic foods that they were now able to purchase. It was a time of plenty- and a celebration of beauty. Several of the animal actors featured in this series have passed away and I love the memories that I have captured in these images. 

What do you hope we as viewers take away from viewing your work?

I hope that viewers will be taken in by the painterly tones and classic composition of the works, and be intrigued by the appearance of the fowl.  The meta message of this project is “remember that you are alive” and I hope that the viewers sense the secondary message regarding animal cruelty.

Tell us what is next for you creatively.

I am in the cusp of deciding among a few projects- and will continue collaborating with my feathered friends.

Atelier 33 | Terry Bleser

Terry Bleser‘s collection Searching for a Sense of Home, part of the Atelier 33 exhibition, is on display in the Griffin Main Gallery until March 26, 2021. Terry’s series explores the idea of trying to find comfort in a new place through understanding one’s relationship with the land. We asked the artist some questions to hear more about her collection.

Which of these images was the impetus for this series? How did it inform how you completed the series?

The image called Fairyland was one of the initial photographs in the series. The marshes often present as thorny bristly places that resist exploration, but this small circle of green grasses surrounded by trees was an invitation to conjure up the fairies to play. It made me think about our age old conflicting feelings about nature.

 

How has your photography changed since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic? Has the Atelier been a motivator to persevere through these trying times?

After 25 years of living outside of Boston I relocated farther south in
Maryland. This was a month before COVID-19 began its spread around the country. It made seeking out new friends and finding all the usual
essentials of daily life difficult. Landscape photography gave me the joy of exploring the area and getting to experience at least one aspect of this
new place. The Atelier was a wonderful opportunity to connect with other photographers and continue to grow in my art.

Has photographing your new home in this context changed your perception of what “home” can mean?

When I arrived here I focussed on moving in and arranging a comfortable nest. Not able to socialize with people, I started exploring the front porches and lawns of the neighborhood to glean a sense of the community from the way they presented themselves through their houses and landscaping. But I longed for a different kind of connection. I realized that in my old home place there were natural areas that I frequented and became familiar with. That gave me a broader sense of home that extended beyond the house and city to the natural world. It was a larger sense of place on the planet that I missed. So I began to explore with my camera, looking for a place.

What do you hope we as viewers take away from viewing your work?

I would hope that we as a species could be more mindful in our treatment of the land. Wetlands have often in the past been considered pest ridden, mucky, thorny, impenetrable places that need to be drained and filled in. But the marshes are more complicated than that. They protect us and provide resources for industries.

 

 

Tell us what is next for you creatively.

I have found two places that I want to get to know well, to spend time developing an awareness of the lives that transpire there. I will carry my camera there and spend some time watching and learning.

Atelier 33 | Judith Montminy

Judith Montminy‘s collection Dancing Alone is on the walls of the Griffin Main Gallery until March 26, 2021, as a part of the Atelier 33 exhibition. Her work represents a departure from her usual subject matter due to COVID-19 restrictions and lockdown. For more insight into the Dancing Alone series, we asked Judith a few questions.

How has your photography changed since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic? Has the Atelier been a motivator to persevere through these trying times?

Worlds apart from my typical street photography, the abstract water-centric images of “Dancing Alone” grew out of a quest for sweet visual lemonade diametrically opposed to the bitter and lonely emotional landscape of COVID-19. 

In March 2020, the pandemic cut me off from the creative urban energy that had powered my art during regular visits with family and friends in Dublin and cities along the East Coast. Then the virus infected my 94-year-old mother; in early April she died. 

As I ached from the rawness of those profound losses, photography offered little solace. 

Yet in the spring, abstract patterns partially hidden outdoors near my home unexpectedly caught my attention. By fall, constructive critiques and encouragement from [instructor] Meg Birnbaum and fellow Atelier 33ers helped nudge my photography in a new direction – one where non-figurative imagery takes center stage and close-up filters help heighten the playful interaction between water and a variety of elements, including air, glass, acrylic ink, food coloring, and oil.

How delightful to discover these unchoreographed dances while traveling a new photographic path forward, even within the confines of a still uncertain future.

What do you hope we as viewers take away from viewing your work?

My hope is that viewers connect with the uninhibited joy and dynamic movement that’s fundamental to the work in “Dancing Alone.”

Tell us what is next for you creatively.

My immediate next creative adventure is Griffin Museum’s “Deepening Your Photographic Practice” course taught this spring by Emily Belz.

Amy Rindskopf's Terra Novus

At the market, I pick each one up, pulled in by the shapes as they sit together, waiting. I feel its heft in my hand, enjoy the textures of the skin or peel, and begin to look closer and closer. The patterns on each individual surface marks them as distinct. I push further still, discovering territory unseen by the casual observer, a new land. I am like a satellite orbiting a distant planet, taking the first-ever images of this newly envisioned place.

This project started as an homage to Edward Weston’s Pepper No. 30 (I am, ironically, allergic to peppers). As I looked for my subject matter at the market, I found that I wasn’t drawn to just one single fruit or vegetable. There were so many choices, appealing to both hand and eye. I decided to print in black and white to help make the images visually more about the shapes, and not about guessing which fruit is smoothest, which vegetable is greenest.

Photography has been paramount in my personal path of healing from disease and

connecting with consciousness. The intention of my work is to overcome the limits of the

mind and engage the spirit. Like a Zen koan, my images are paradoxes hidden in plain

sight. They are intended to be sat with meditatively, eventually revealing greater truths

about the world and about one’s self.

 

John Chervinsky’s photography is a testament to pensive work without simple answers;

it connects by encouraging discovery and altering perspectives. I see this scholarship

as a potential to continue his legacy and evolve the boundaries of how photography can

explore the human condition.

 

Growing my artistic skill and voice as an emerging photographer is critical, I see this as

a rare opportunity to strengthen my foundation and transition towards an established

and influential future. I am thirsty to engage viewers and provide a transformative

experience through my work. I have been honing my current project and building a plan

for its complete execution. The incredible Griffin community of mentors and the

generous funds would be instrumental for its development. I deeply recognize the

hallmark moment this could be for the introduction of the work. Thank you for providing

this incredible opportunity for budding visions and artists that know they have something

greater to share with the world.
